Rest and Sleep play an important role in all aspects of physical and mental well being. Several medical conditions impact directly on sleep while a host of other conditions are precipitated by poor sleep. In this fantastic introduction, Tanya Muir, “The Sleep OT”, explores the context of sleep health for function and the importance of including sleep assessment and intervention in all adult physical and psychiatric intervention.   This course will review:
  • Basic Physiology of Sleep
  • Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Health and Function
  • Common Sleep Disorders in Adulthood
  • Screening and Assessment – who, how and referrals
  • Introduction to Behavioural Sleep Interventions, resources and referrals.

The OT Link is thrilled to welcome Tanya Muir (BSc OT), “The Sleep OT”, to present this Introduction to Adult Sleep Health.

Tanya is a passionate occupational therapist with a special interest in sleep health and mental wellness. Since qualifying from Wits University in 2012, she has gained diverse work experience in adult neurological rehabilitation, paediatric physical and learning disabilities, adult mental health, training and clinical supervision. She completed a Diploma in Advanced Paediatric Sleep Practitioner Training (EDS Training, UK) in 2020. Currently, she runs a private practice consulting with both adult and paediatric clients with sleep disorders and difficulties and holds a part-time post at the University of Pretoria training undergraduate OT students. She has presented widely on the topic of sleep health, and is a strong advocate for the OT role in the occupation of sleep and supporting health and wellness.

This is practical and useful information to be applied in one's own life!

Covers the whole age spectrum. A very necessary tool to add value to many treatment situations.

Sleep is important as occupation for OTS

The presentation was excellent. Very informative information which are updated from the university syllabus. Very useful for health care professionals in the work that they do with their patients or clients. Education on sleep is a very important aspect that is neglected.

The ins and outs of adult sleep

This was a hugely informative presentation on the science behind sleep as well as why it is a priority to think about, screen for, and manage as an OT.
