This month we welcome:
Advocate Ian Dutton
BA, LLB: The University of Natal
LLM, Medical Law and Ethics: The University of Edinburgh (Partially completed)
Ian Dutton is a distinguished Advocate and a member of the Society of Advocates of KwaZulu-Natal since 1997. He has a strong background in mediation, being an Accredited Mediator with Mediation in Motion, and served as an Acting Judge in the Durban High Court. Ian completed his LLB and began an LLM; however, he had to pause his studies when his family expanded with the arrival of twins. This life change sparked his interest in medical law, leading him to write extensively on the subject. He has published three books and currently serves as the editor of the South African Medico-Legal Reports.
His professional experience includes serving as the in-house attorney at The AIDS Law Project and the Centre for Applied Legal Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. Ian has also held significant roles in the medical law community, including convenor of the South African Medico-Legal Coalition Task Team for the Private Sector and chairperson of the South African Medico-Legal Association’s KwaZulu-Natal Branch.
In addition, Ian has established the South African Medico-Legal Reports site, which provides valuable resources for individuals to stay informed about relevant case law and judgments. The site also offers training opportunities and facilitates connections among experts within the medico-legal field.
