Course Summary

This course provides a practical and evidence-based introduction to panic attacks and panic disorder. You will learn how to recognise and assess panic symptoms, and understand how panic disorder develops over time. The course explores the role of catastrophic misinterpretations in maintaining anxiety, and introduces key Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) strategies used in treatment. A special focus is placed on interoceptive exposure, helping you understand how safely confronting feared physical sensations can reduce panic and build long-term confidence. It will give OT’s a foundation to manage panic, helping clients reduce avoidance and  improve engagement in meaningful occupations.

About the Presenter

The OT Link is delighted to welcome Clinical Psychologist, Tyrone Edgar to present this online Coffee Club course.

Tyrone completed his clinical training at WITS, graduating with distinction in Clinical Psychology. His master’s research explored mediating factors in burnout, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue.

Tyrone is also an internationally certified cognitive-behavioural therapist (CBT) who has received extensive training through the Unified Protocol Institute, Boston USA. The kind of CBT Tyrone utilises, addresses emotional disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and other related emotional difficulties. Visit the Unified Protocol Institute for more info.

Tyrone has applied his clinical skills in a variety of settings, such as the acute Adult and Child Psychiatric Units at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) and the CHBAH Burns Unit. Tyrone now works in private practice focusing on various emotional disorders alongside a multi-disciplinary team of, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and other mental health practitioners.

Tyrone also lectures the WITS M.A. classes in CBT, supervises clinical psychologists and trains SADAG counsellors in the basics of counselling. Tyrone works closely with SADAG – the largest mental health advocacy organisation in Africa. He believes the more others understand mental health, the easier it becomes for those suffering from such conditions to access good health care. He regularly appears in the media promoting mental health awareness. Some of the media platforms he has featured in include the YOU Magazine, Mental Health Matters Television Show and 702.
