Modules:

  1. Dementia and staging
  2. Sensory stimulation linked to stages of Dementia
  3. Linking stages of Dementia, Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability and sensory input to tailor intervention.

This course will review

  1. The stages of dementia and explore the needs at each stage.
  2. The Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability and how it relates to assessment and intervention at the different stages of Dementia.
  3. The sensory systems and the effect of aging and Dementia on Sensory Processing.
  4. The role of sensory stimulation and multisensory rooms in the management of cognitive, behavioural and psychological symptoms of Dementia.
  5. Different, developmentally graded, sensory programmes that have been developed by OTs to address the sensory needs at each stage of dementia/level of Creative Ability. to improve or maintain function and quality of life
  6. A multitude of sensory based activities (active and passive) that can be used in Dementia Care at different stages and levels of function.

About the Presenter

Description

The OT Link is excited to bring you this  brand new Coffee Club with Sylvia Birkhead.

Sylvia Birkhead (M.OT) has almost 40 years of experience as an occupational therapist. She has consulted to many NGOs (MS Society, Headway, Parkinson’s Association, Stroke Aid, and many more), worked clinically, lectured at WITS, provided training to professionals, care workers and the general public.  In the last 10 years, Sylvia has specialised in gerontology and geriatric care, incorporating sensory stimulation into practice. Sylvia has published chapters in various books, articles in SAJOT and Focus, The Child magazine, Discovery Health newsletter, Rolling Inspiration and various other publications. She was awarded the Albie Sachs award in 2004.
