Course Summary

This course aims to equip occupational therapists working in Medico-legal, Insurance, Vocational Rehabilitation and Mental Health settings with an evidence‑informed, current framework for Work Evaluation in the Psychiatric Context — particularly where return-to-work decisions, substance use, personality presentations, and fluctuating mental health make assessment and recommendations complex.

  • Appropriate timing of the Psychiatric FCE (and when it should be deferred)
  • Clarifying the OT’s scope in mental health–related work capacity evaluations
  • Assessment strategies for complex presentations (e.g. substance use, personality disorders, in-patient vs vocational contexts)
  • Translating mental health findings into defensible opinions about work ability
  • Formulating reasonable, evidence-informed RTW recommendations
  • Reporting language and documentation that stands up in insurer/employer/medico-legal contexts

About the Presenter

The OT Link is delighted to welcome July Masango to present this online Coffee Club course.

July Masango (Candidate PhD WITS) completed a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy at University of Witwatersrand in 2013. He has extensive post-graduate training including an advanced Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Pretoria, Certificate in Practical Labour Law from UCT, a Masters in Occupational Therapy from the University of Pretoria and is currently busy with his PhD in Occupational Therapy focusing on Mental Health at the University of Witwatersrand. He completed his community service at Kalafong Academic Hospital and then worked at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Tshwane Rehab Hospitals performing Functional Capacity Evaluations and assessment and treatment mental healthcare patients. July continues to work as a Sessional Lecturer for the University of Pretoria, Head of Department OT Services: Evexia Psychiatric Day Hospital Group and Director and Principal OT at Masango Occupational Therapy Services.  He has served on various panels as a medical expert including: Gauteng Province Vocational Rehabilitation Task Team, Council of Medical Scheme (CMS) and the Health Professions Council Of South Africa (HPCSA). He brings a wealth of clinical, academic and research background to this presentation.
