Summary of the article

Access to quality rehabilitation services in lower- to middle-income countries such as South Africa remains challenging. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are increasingly valued as effective models for public health delivery in these settings. However, their application in South Africa’s rehabilitation sector, particularly in light of the upcoming National Health Insurance (NHI) for universal health coverage, remains unclear. This study explores stakeholders’ views on utilising PPPs in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to improve the availability of and access to quality rehabilitation services in anticipation of the NHI. It identifies both the promising benefits and significant challenges of leveraging PPPs to enhance rehabilitation service accessibility and quality, and to inform effective, NHI-aligned implementation strategies.
