Objectives of this course:

On completion of this CPD activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Briefly discuss visual perception in stroke survivors.
  • List the screening techniques used in assessing visual perceptual deficits.
  • Describe the limitations with some of the screening techniques currently employed.
  • Discuss recommendations to improve the screening procedures of stroke survivors with visual perceptual deficits.

Summary of the article

Previous research indicated poor consensus on visual perceptual deficits and various challenges to practice in this area. This research attempted to quantify the findings of the previous qualitative study to determine the challenges and facilitators of clinical practice. Using a survey, the researchers determined that Visual perceptual deficits are screened at a similar rate to sensory vision or visual neglect. The researchers hypothesised that underdiagnosis of visual perceptual deficits may stem from reliance on subjective and non-standardised screening approaches. Furthermore, there were conflicting definitions of visual perception held among clinicians. The researchers recommend increased training provision and development and implementation of brief performance-based screening tools.
