Essentials for Entering the Medico-legal Field

Course Overview

In support of the government’s call for social distancing in an effort to contain COVID-19 spread, this course has been converted into an online module. This course has been accredited for 5 CEUs and consists of:
  1. A 2 hour online presentation on the Essentials for entering the Medico-legal field as an OT
  2. A 1 hour recorded Case Presentation illustrating the process of assessment and reporting; followed by a question and answer session that was hosted in April 2020.
  3. 15 multiple choice questions about the course to ensure the course has been watched and the content understood, in accordance with HPCSA requirements for points allocation.
  4. On completion of the questionnaire, you will be able to print your CEU certificate for 3 CEU points.
  5. Your registration fee also gives you access to the online journal article activity titled: “Occupational therapists in medico-legal work – South African experiences and opinions” accredited for 2 CEUs. Once you have read the article and completed the quiz, you will be able to print your CEU certificate for a further 2 CEUs.
This workshop will review:
  • Knowledge, practical tips and strategies to make your assessments and reports more insightful and efficient.
  • Context and types of functional capacity assessments in SA.
  • Skills requirements for entry into medicolegal/functional capacity field.
  • Medicolegal assessment – the process from initiation to settlement.
  • Specific considerations for assessment in the medicolegal environment.
  • Client examples, troubleshooting and networking.

Kathy (BSc (Medical Sciences); B Sc (OT) has extensive clinical experience in the public and private health care settings focusing on adult physical rehabilitation, hands and functional capacity evaluations. She has also worked as a lecturer at WITS and is currently studying towards a Post Graduate diploma in Education.  She is passionate about excellence in healthcare; training and teaching; project management; service management and quality assurance.
