As South Africans, Heritage Day is a time to celebrate the rich cultural diversity that defines our nation. From sharing a braai with friends and family, to embodying the spirit of Ubuntu, enjoying the warmth of storytelling around the fire, or coming together for a traditional family meal, these everyday traditions reflect the deep cultural connections that shape our lives.
In occupational therapy (OT), these same principles of community, shared experiences, and cultural identity are essential to understanding and supporting the individuals we work with.
“Changing contexts” in OT means acknowledging the diverse cultural backgrounds we encounter. It requires us to be culturally aware, integrating this understanding into our therapeutic approach. By making culture matter, we ensure that therapy is relevant and meaningful, tailored to the values, customs, and beliefs of each person.
On this Heritage Day, let’s commit to making inclusivity happen by embracing cultural competence in our work. By leading with empathy, we create a healthcare environment where every culture is valued, fostering true inclusivity and driving meaningful change in society.
