Summary of the content

The use of social media has grown rapidly and practitioners and students make use of various sites in their personal and professional capacities.  The benefits and dangers of these interactions need to considered from an ethical and professional perspective. The same laws apply in cyberspace as the real world. This article provides the risks associated with the use of social media, the South African legal landscape, the benefits of social media for professionals and the professions and recommendations for conduct of medial practitioners and students in the social media.

Objectives of the course:

On completion of this CPD activity, the participant will be able to:

a.         Discuss the risks associated with the use of social media, namely blurring of boundaries, confidentiality, public image of the profession and the impact on inter-professional relationships.

b.         Explain the South African legal landscape regarding cyberspace.

c.         Discuss the benefits of social media for practitioners and the profession.

d.         Discuss the recommendations for conduct of medical practitioners and students in the social media.
